Athletics Weekly, Week of September 27

By Mike Nolan, AD

“In the end, it’s extra effort that separates a winner from second place. But winning takes a lot more than that, too. It starts with complete command of the fundamentals. Then it takes desire, determination, discipline, and self-sacrifice. And finally, it takes a great deal of love, fairness, and respect for your fellow man. Put all these together, and even if you don’t win, how can you lose?”-Jesse Owens

Greetings Sports Fans! It was a tremendous week in the land of Guardian Athletics this past week! There was so much support for our Cross-Country Program at our Pack the Park event with tons of community support for the program. On Saturday, the program competed well against some of the best runners from around country at the Blue Lake Invitational on Saturday. All of the meet results can be found at www.athletic.net Speaking of results, Leanne has updated scores from all levels from the year and they can be found at www.ibwathletics.com Our varsity soccer programs ended a tough preseason schedule with convincing wins for the women against Sunset and the men took down Southridge. Our Volleyball Program took a big step towards competing for a city title with sweeps against McDaniel and Cleveland The Varsity had a great showing at the Westview Tournament over the weekend going 3-1 as well. The football team can’t seem to escape the injury bug but our team keeps continuing to battle. We came up just short on Friday against McDaniel. And our Cheer and Dance Programs continue to prepare for their first competitions. From the Athletic Department, we would like to thank our student-athletes and the coaches for their continued effort to teach resiliency, effort, and inclusivity.

Positive Coaching Alliance- Winning is a goal but not our purpose is something we emphasize as a coaching staff. Our purpose with athletics is so much more. It is about learning to sacrifice for the betterment of the team. It is learning about yourself and how hard you can push yourself. It is about becoming a better leader that will hopefully translate to much bigger things later in life. It is about learning resiliency. The following from PCA and the Learner Lab are great resources regarding all of these topics. https://devzone.positivecoach.org/resource/video/nate-boyer-resilience https://devzone.positivecoach.org/resource/video/how-self-compassion-helps-resilienceand-handling-failure https://thelearnerlab.com/building-resilience/ https://open.spotify.com/episode/3zOt4wFscUeXIEJ0TCrjQC?si=MtsiH7iURxQspTJqusf3w&dl_branch=1 Guardian Athletic Leadership Council- We had our second meeting of the year this past week where our sub-committee groups discussed ideas regarding community outreach, school spirit, and staff appreciation. It is so great to see kids engaging in topics that we hope to have a positive impact in our school and community. On Friday, we hosted a pizza feed and handed out t-shirts for our staff who could attend in recognition for all the work they do in our building. Ida B. Wells Dance Team- Our dance team, led by Coach Kimberley Allen, is preparing for their first performance of the year in conjunction with our Cheer Program, on October 22nd at our homecoming game. We look forward to seeing their first performance! JV2 and JV Women’s Soccer Season Update- From Coach Gellar,” Highlights so far: 2-0 victory over Lincoln, A stellar goalkeeping performance for Luna Simpson against Jesuit with 25+ saves! Players that have stood out: Zoe Hedderick for her leadership on and off the field as well as Sylvie Hefferon. Sabine Veillette for her continued and constant improvement of having to play on her weak side of the field. Lyra Roska, Audrey Garrison and Ava Gardner have made the biggest improvements since the beginning of the season thus far. Overall it has been a fun season thus far. We continue to have fun during practices and games. We are becoming more confident with the ball and not as afraid to try something new in games.” From Coach Savage, “This years Girls JV soccer team has been working hard this preseason, improving as individuals and as a team. We have had the privilege of playing some of the best programs in the state and although we have more losses than wins, we have shown ourselves that we can compete with the best. Our defensive effort has been fantastic, with Amelie De Villiers and her supporting cast of Lucy, Delaney, Kira, Etta, Rian and Mackenzie anchoring the back line, we are difficult to break down. Our goalkeeping duo of Kieren Cratbree and and Mariella Woodside have made outstanding saves all season. Whether, bravely coming off their line, diving to make a save or deftly passing the ball, they have been solidly reliable. In the midfield we have Grace Carson providing leadership, stability and distribution. She is joined by Tea, Emily, Emma, Claire K and Claire D. Together they are a force to be reckoned with. It's worth mentioning Emma Boyles’ sublime, 20 yrd. blast in the final seconds of the first half against Crescent Valley. Her goal put us in the drivers seat. In the attack we have Simryn, Molly, Opal, Sophia, Maia, and Sylvie, who have been relentless in pursuit of goals. Sophia Toobian has given us all a boost with her booming voice and personalized confections. Maia Schabel's tenacity and pursuit of the ball against Sunset set a tone that will carry over into the PIL season. Our supporters have really given us a boost as well, lining our sidelines at all the home games. Thank you from the whole team. Go Guardians! JV2 and JV Men’s Soccer Updates- From Coach Liebman, “The Men's JV2 Program has had a great start to the season thus far. Currently, the team has 3 wins (vs. Putnam, vs. Sherwood, vs. Newberg), 1 tie (vs. Lincoln), and 1 loss (vs. Jesuit). We have 2 8-0 wins over Putnam & Newberg. The growth in this team over 6 weeks so far has been amazing. Our focus is on supporting each other & working together, and this group of young men have truly become a team on the field. We are led by our two captains, Alex Lynch & Jack Leland. Alex Lynch is the starting forward for the JV2 team and co-captain. He is also currently the team's leading scorer with 6 goals in 5 games. Alex is always there to pick up his teammates with positive encouragement, a team first mentality, and a drive to help all of those around him get better. Jack Leland is a starting center midfielder for the JV2 team and the other co-captain. He has 4 goals in 5 games, 2nd on the team, including scoring in 4 of our 5 matches so far this season. Jack leads by example - consistently outworking the opponent on the field and using his fitness & soccer IQ to help lead our team to goals and attacking chances. Jake Petersen is the starting goalkeeper for the JV2 team. Across 5 games, he has only allowed 3 goals, averaging less than 1 per game. He's been anchored by a defense led by Ian Vanderperren, Andy Lesch, George Bilanzich, Ben Bilanzich, and Owen Randall. Jake has worked very hard this season to grow as a goalkeeper and has done a fantastic job not only making strong saves, but igniting the offense after a save with great delivery.” From Coach Kinlaw, “Highlights of the season. • Spanish exchange student Jose Berzosa scored directly from a corner kick to cap a 4-0 win vs Tualatin in our first game of the season. • Goalkeeper Shankara Carson scored during a short turn on the field as a center forward vs Aloha. • Charlie Kramer subbed on with 10 minutes left in the first half vs Beaverton and proceeded to score and win a penalty (resulting in a second goal), turning a 1-1 tie into a 3-1 lead at half time. It has been a pleasure having two foreign exchange students on the JV team this season. Jose and Lorenzo bring a love and joy for soccer that is contagious, and they have lifted the team spirit all season. We have had a good first half of the season, controlling most of our games, and winning them all. We are lucky to have an experienced, deep, and balanced JV team. At least 12 players on the team have scored a goal this season, and we have only allowed 3 goals to this point. Nonetheless, there is plenty for us to improve upon, and our strongest opponents are still to come. The Week Ahead- We are in full league swing with all of our programming moving forward. All of our soccer programs will be facing PIL teams this week. Volleyball has a home match on Wednesday against Benson. The JV Team will be traveling to Camas on Saturday. Our Football Program has three contests this week with two lower level games against Banks and Roosevelt and the Varsity travels to Roosevelt on Friday. 8 th Annual PIL Open Golf Tournament- On Wednesday, September 29th, the PIL will be hosting its annual Golf Tournament to raise funds for PIL Athletics to help support communities around our district. This year it will be held at Pumpkin Ridge. He played every minute of a 1-1 tie and 4-0 win. Harry’s on field leadership was the key factor in both positive performances for the team.” Mariella Woodside So. Women’s Soccer-This weeks player of the week is Sophomore Goalkeeper Mariella Woodside who made some outstanding saves against Sunset, Jesuit and Mountainside and provides a calming influence to our defense. Coaches Corner- We like to highlight coaches in our program and this week we are highlighting our Head Men’s Soccer Coach, Dylan Lomanto. Where are you from? Where did you grow up? I am from Portland. I attended Lincoln High School and graduated in 2010. Tell us a little about your family? Do you have any cool traditions? My family is all soccer players. My parents met playing soccer at Whittier College and my brother, Nico, is currently a varsity player for Ida B. Wells. How long have you been coaching and where have your stops been? I began coaching in Oregon 8 years ago after returning from college. I have coached at FC Portland and United PDX at the club level, and Lincoln and Ida B. Wells high schools. What do you enjoy the most about coaching? My favorite thing about coaching soccer is watching players figure out problems on their own. Because the game is so free flowing, players will rarely be faced with the same situation twice. My job is to provide the players with enough information and confidence to make their own decisions when faced with new situations. Do you have any game day superstitions or rituals? I always arrive to the field before the players do so that I have time to get mentally prepared on my own. When I was still playing I made sure to always step onto the field with my left foot (dominant foot) first. What lessons can you draw from playing soccer? Most of what I know about grit, determination, and the rewards of hard work I learned from playing soccer. As I get older I notice more and more how those lessons are applicable to my professional work life. Any one particular moment in your coaching or playing career that stands out? My fondest coaching moment came in a Wells game last year. After being down twice against Centennial we came back to win 3-2. It was a great example of a team being greater than the sum of its parts. Is there still time to come out for the soccer program? Players are always welcome to reach out to me to find an alternative time to tryout for our program.

Sunday Tid-Bits- "Your problem is how you are going to spend this one odd and precious life you have been issued. Whether you're going to spend it trying to look good and creating the illusion that you have power over people and circumstances, or whether you are going to taste it, enjoy it and find out the truth about who you are.” — Anne Lamott, Novelist

I. 5 Things to Quit Right Now 1. Trying to please everyone. 2. Fearing change. 3. Living in the past. 4. Putting yourself down. 5. Overthinking.

II. Mindsets for the 21st Century Leading and coaching in the 21st century will require us to be: • Positive Difference Makers • Truth-Tellers & True Believers • Fresh Thinkers & Servant Leaders • Open Minded & Lifetime Students • Strategic Risk Takers & Discipline Listeners • Voracious Readers & Compelling Storytellers

III. There Is No Finish Line Things we should never stop doing no matter how old we are: 1. Never stop dreaming. A person without imagination can hardly find the joy of life. 2. Never stop saying “I love you”. It’s never too much. Tell your loved ones you love them every day. 3. Never stop exploring. The world is so big that we should never stay in our comfort zone. 4. Never stop doing good deeds. Though you may not get returns, you’ll be satisfied and fulfilled when you look back. 5. Never stop having faith in yourself. A strong faith can carry you to anywhere you want. 6. Never stop learning. When one stops learning, one dies. Source: Lifehack

IV. Question Which of my relationships are win-win? Which of my relationships are one-sided? V. This Week I Will 1. Stay hungry. 2. Stay humble. 3. Take accountability. 4. Step forward into growth. 5. Worry less, have more faith.

The Last Words… “Every single step counts. Even the tiniest of efforts you put into everyday take you closer to your better days. Know that when it's too difficult and you are struggling to hang in there, it's the little changes and the little choices you dare to make that help you move towards hope again. So don't discredit yourself if you didn't accomplish a lot today. If you don't give up on life and its possibilities even on your darkest days; if you believe with all your heart that even the worst of things in your life can turn out to be the best for you; the right time will come and things will change and one day you will look back to this day with peace and gratitude that you had the courage to choose to stay.” — Dhiman, Artist
