By Mike Nolan, Athletic Director

“Don’t measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should have accomplished with your ability.”John Wooden

Greetings Sports Fans! The Fall Season is upon us and I can’t tell you how exciting it is to see our student-athletes gearing up for competition all over campus! To see the smiles and faces of our coaches and student-athletes brings a little normalcy back to Ida B. Wells as we prepare to enter a new school year that still faces challenges to say the least. It is our goal and mission that athletics can provide a vehicle for positive social and emotional growth, while at the same time, renewing some old rivalries with some of our friends around the state and PIL. The athletic department wants to send a huge shout out to our amazing group of teachers and support staff who are working tirelessly to prepare for a safe and productive return to our building.

Power of Positivity- This year, more than ever, it will be extremely important for all of us to remind ourselves of the power of positivity. Ida B. Wells Volleyball- Our Volleyball Program is back at it under the leadership of Head Coach Mark Mendak. We can’t thank him enough for his steady leadership during his time at our school. Here are a few words about the upcoming season from Coach Mendak, “Glad to be back on the court with the great student-athletes of Ida B Wells. Looking forward to an exciting season at all levels led by 6 SR's. Jamboree for Varsity and JV went well with both winning two sets and losing two sets. Lots of positive play and hustle was shown against some non conference teams. Looking forward to JV2 Jamboree Monday and conference play starting Tuesday at home!  Coaching news, Dave Kim will take over next week as head JV coach. Also happy to announce Mary Moore will be assisting with varsity and as well as all levels.”

Ida B. Wells Football- The Ida B. Wells Football Program is fired up for the upcoming season. Our Head Coach, Keith Bennett and his staff, have done a tremendous job of growing the football program from top to bottom. Not only are the high school numbers increasing in participation but we have over 130+ Youth Football Players playing football as well! Here are a couple of words from Coach Bennett, “We had a successful jamboree on Friday Night!  We debuted both our new home and away jerseys.  Running a limited number of plays we consistently moved the ball down the field on offense and our defense put constant pressure on our opponents.  Our offensive line played amazing during both games opening up huge running lanes for our running backs.  Most of our offensive line is composed of players that normally play other positions.  For them to step in and dominate is a testament to the hard work and selflessness that successful teams are built from.  Our running backs weaved their way through the defense for big gains all night long.  Jaquince Jessie had some amazing runs and made several defenders miss.  It was a great night!  Thank you to all the spectators, parents and volunteers!”

Ida B. Wells XC- Our Cross Country Program is off and running(pun intended)! They had their first meet of the year this past week in Wilsonville under the lights. The program is poised to make a run this year and there was a great article in the OSAA spotlight about the team this year. You can find it here, https://www.osaa.org/today/article/2182/view?title=Girls+cross+country%3A+%27Sky+is+the+limit%27+for+rising+Wells+team

Coach Esbensen had this to say about the program, “Ida B. Wells cross country is off to a great start. We have had 135 athletes join us for this season. The women start the season ranked #4 and the men #6. We have had some great early season performances and can’t wait to enter the regular season. We have had elite performances from Josie Fale, Petra Schuster, Kai Mitchel-Riess and Charlotte Richman. We have also had some break out performances from Asher Danielson and Olivia Kozitza. It should be a great season. And there is still time to come join us!!

Ida B. Wells Men’s Soccer- The Men’s Soccer Program is poised for success this year with a solid nucleus of returners and a wave of younger players. They kick off their pre-season schedule this week. Head Coach Dylan Lomanto had this to say about the upcoming season, “Men's soccer returns 11 players from last year's varsity roster. The roster is heavily reliant on younger players this year, but it has an experienced core with seven starters returning from last year. This year's group is very technically proficient with a high soccer IQ.  The team is led by senior captains Jacob Berg and Harry Watson and junior captain Carter Kroenke.”

Ida B. Wells Cheer- Our Cheer Program has been guided by our two outstanding coaches, Lynsey Smith and Wilson Alum, Maya Berns. We are looking forward to seeing and hearing them on the sidelines this year. Coach Smith had this to say about the upcoming season, “It’s been two long years since we've been on the sidelines for Friday Night Lights and we're eager to get back! Not only do we have a new name and a new mascot, but we have TWO squads this season, the green squad and the white squad. we've also welcomed two new coaches to our program! There are so many exciting things happening within Guardian Cheer and across all of Wells Athletics.  We know it's going to be an awesome year!”

Ida B. Wells Women’s Soccer- The Women’s Soccer Program is gearing up for a great season ahead. Coach Richards had this to say about the upcoming season, ” Our Women's Soccer program looks to continue to grow and build with a young but motivated group of athletes.  There are exciting things to come from all three levels in the program as we look to cement Guardians Soccer as one of the top programs in the PIL.

Our Varsity team returns twelve players, and are anchored at the back by senior leaders Daphne Reid and goalkeeper Finley Crabtree. Juniors Elle Unflat, Hannah Bradley, and Devera Graham look to lead the attack going forward, and are supported by a youthful group of nine sophomores and three freshmen whose workrate, desire, and experience goes well beyond their age.  With a challenging preseason that includes the likes of Jesuit, Mountainside, Sherwood, and Sunset, this team is ready to be challenged and pushed to their limits, with the ultimate goal of competing for another PIL Championship!

Our JV and JV2 teams continue to improve as well, and showcase the incredible depth in our program.  15 sophomores lead the way for this year's JV team, supported by three juniors and three freshmen.  Challenged with the same schedule as Varsity, the girls look to measure themselves against some of the toughest programs in the state.  Our JV2 team welcomes Kasey Geller as a first year coach in the program, and looks to continue to improve as well.  Though a majority freshmen team, this group has displayed incredible drive and commitment so far in preseason, highlighted by their willingness to train in the 6:30am practice slot!

Everyone in the program is excited and grateful for the opportunity to return to a full season of high school soccer, and to continue to build on this new legacy of the Ida B. Wells Guardians!”
