Greetings Sports Fans!

The past week was a great week in Ida B. Wells Athletics. We had our first Wrestling meet this past week and our first home Basketball games all while most of our spring programming was still competing during the culminating week and what a culminating week it was. Our Baseball Program took down Jesuit, our golf programs were able to compete with some of the best in the state, our track program had an outstanding showing at the District Meet and at the State culminating event, our tennis programs were able to round out their seasons, and Men’s Lacrosse had their final home game of the year. Finally, we have six spring programs make the top ten in the OSAA Academic All-State! Outstanding accomplishments for a great group of student-athletes and coaches!

At the 2021 Oregon 6A Track and Field Showcase over the weekend, we had some tremendous results come in with both teams competing extremely well. The Women’s Team finished in 12th place while the Men’s Team finished in 2nd place with 32 teams competing at the event. Rolin Griffiths finished first in the 100M. The 4 x 100 team of Rolin Griffiths, Jayden Brannan, Nolan Malcomson, and Koen Kuhn finished first. Nolan Malcomson finished first in the 300M Hurdles and second in the 110M Hurdles. Guiliano Scasso finished in the top five in both the 1500M and 3000M. We had three runners finish in the top ten in the 3000M including Charlotte Richman finishing second, Josie Fale finishing seventh, and Sylvia Ingram finishing tenth. Charlotte also finished fourth in the 1500M as well. Mia Fowler finished in the top ten in the Pole Vault and Josie Fale finished in the top ten in the 800. What a great way to cap off an outstanding season! A huge thanks to all the student-athletes, coaches, and volunteers for making it such a great year!

Season 4 Update

Wrestling

After 450 days, Ida B Wells Wrestlers compete again! The 2021 Wrestling season is here, and our Guardian wrestlers opened competition last Wednesday against host Grant Generals and Franklin Lightning. Our eight Wells wrestlers competed well.  They were Emily Radtke, Sienna Spezza, Catherine Karkosky, Lucas Barrera, Gus Johnson, Andrew Webb, Austin Williams, and George Ramsey.Wrestling Next up:  Wednesday at 4:30 at Roosevelt HS against Roosevelt and Cleveland. The Ida B. Wells Wrester Student-Athlete of the Week is Well’s Catherine Karkosky. She  is not afraid to try new sports.  Just days after winning the individual JV Golf district title, Catherine also competed for the Wells Wrestling Team.

Women’s Basketball
The Women’s Basketball team took on Cleveland in their season and home opener and what a game it was. The game went into overtime and the Guardians came out on top winning 55-51. It was a back and forth battle all the way down to the wire. Eve Hart is the Women’s Basketball Student-Athlete of the Week. She had a tremendous game against Cleveland and has a huge factor both on offense and defense all the while focusing on being and outstanding teammate. They travel to Grant on Monday and host Jesuit on Wednesday and Newberg on Friday.

Men’s Basketball
The Ida B. Wells Men’s Basketball team opened their season with a home victory over Cleveland and road losses to Wilsonville and Jefferson. The Guardians have played some very good basketball so far and are looking forward to games against Grant, Benson and Beaverton this coming week. Home vs Cleveland : High energy on the defensive end the ability to score in transition propelled Wells to a 68-61 victory in the opening game for both teams. Senior Logan Robertson led five players in double figures with 17 points. @ Wilsonville: The Guardians gave the perennial 5A powerhouse a run for their money at the Wildcat gym last Wednesday night. Wilsonville boasts one of the tallest teams in the state and presented a tough matchup for the undersized Wells squad. The game was tight through 3 quarters with the hosts leading by two, 47-45, heading into the 4th quarter. Wilsonville’s size eventually won out, 69-60. Junior Leo Sewell led the scoring with 17 points. @ Jefferson: After trailing by 27 points at the end of the first quarter, Wells responded and played even with the NE Portland Juggernaut the rest of the way. I’m very proud of our team for continuing to compete after a disastrous start. Colin Anderson and Shuaib Dahir came off the bench to spark the turnaround. The Guardians outscored Jeff 28-15 in the second quarter and cut the Demo lead to 12 with 3:30 left in the 3rd quarter. Lamar Washington exploded for 50 points for Jefferson, drilling 9 bombs from beyond the arc. Leo Sewell led a balanced Guardian attack with 17 points. IBW Men’s Basketball player of the week: Leo Sewell averaged 15.7 points and a little over 5 assists per game for IBW this past week. Leo is a third year starter and team captain for the Guardians. Leo is an excellent student, putting the same effort into his studies as he does his jump shot.

Nuggets for the Week-
“My life changed when I became responsible for inventing the life I wanted.”

― Nedra Glover Tawwab, Set Boundaries, Find Peace: A Guide to Reclaiming Yourself

I. Clarity + Connection
The biggest shift in your life happens when you go inward. You step in and observe all that you find with acceptance...

  • Heal yourselfbut don't rush.
  • Help peoplebut have boundaries.
  • Love othersbut don't let them harm you.
  • Love yourselfbut don't become egotistical.
  • Stay informedbut don't overwhelm yourself.
  • Embrace change, but keep pursuing your goals.

II. Leading Through Transformation

The core of transformational leadership consists of the following four dimensions:

  1. Individualized Consideration: The degree to which the leader attends to each follower’s needs, acts as a mentor or coach to the follower, and listens to the follower’s concerns and needs.
  2. Intellectual Stimulation: Such leaders encourage their followers to be innovative and creative. The leaders focus on the “what” in problems and do not focus on the blaming part of it.
  3. Inspirational Motivation: The degree to which the leader articulates a vision that is appealing and inspiring to followers. Purpose and meaning provide the energy that drives a group forward.
  4. Idealized Influence: The degree to which the leader acts as a role model for their followers. The foundation of transformational leadership is the promotion of consistent vision, mission, and a set of values to the members.

III. Breathe. Heal. Grow

Gentle reminders on starting within and showing up for life:

  • It’s okay not to be okay. We were born to be real, not perfect.
  • Joy and inner peace are our birthrights — no more settling for what is not elevating our spirit.
  • The power lies within to forgive + let go as we are the authors of our healing and personal transformation.
  • We can commit to growing and becoming our best selves, even if those around us don’t understand and participate.
  • Playing small and shrinking, so others don’t feel uncomfortable is a disservice to our sacred gift of life.
